Nordic and Baltic ministers will soon be meeting in Riga with leaders from the IT and telecom sector and digitalisation agencies. The theme is the possibilities afforded by the development of 5G for individuals and businesses in the region. The region aims to lead development in the field.

The Nordic-Baltic collaboration on digitalisation is unique, and places the region firmly on the world map in terms of cross-border, integrated digital solutions. Our strengths are that we have much in common, a high level of digital maturity, and a willingness to share knowledge.

Where the ministers meet profesionales

5G Techritory, which will be held on 27-28 September, is a good example of the strong collaboration between the Nordic and Baltic countries. The event offers a platform where ministers, leaders from digitalisation agencies, and the IT and telecom sector can meet.

Therefore, it is natural that the Nordic-Baltic high level group for digitalisation also meets in Riga to discuss the implementation of the common political goals for digital conversion in the region. A key item on the agenda is a Nordic-Baltic action plan for roll-out of 5G.

The ethical aspect

A Nordic-Baltic action plan for artificial intelligence (AI), which follows up an earlier political declaration on the subject, is also on the agenda. A key element will be the sharing of knowledge about how we shape legislation regarding AI; on the one hand, this must not slow developments but, on the other, must secure the ethical aspects. This is an area of particular concern for the Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Dagfinn Høybråten.

The Nordic and Baltic regions have developed a common action plan for leading digitalisation. In the current debate on ethics, we can put forward some important guidelines

5G Techritory marks a turning point. After several years in which the technology industry has faced strong criticism for damaging democracy, forming monopolies, tax evasion, and invasion of people’s privacy, the time has come to focus on solutions.
